Simdega College, Simdega established in 1960, is one of the oldest
institutions under Ranchi
University. It was founded with the generous contribution of Sri Jagdish Prasad, a social
thinker and
Philomath from Tukupani, who donated the land on which the college building now stands.
Situated in
one of the remotest areas, the college serves the educational needs of a large population,
extending to
the borders of the states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
With a student strength of approximately 3500, the college has made remarkable
progress,
continuously striving to fulfill the educational aspirations and dreams of the local tribal
communities. In
addition to undergraduate courses, the college offers master’s degrees in five disciplines
and a
vocational course in Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA). The college is also home to an
IGNOU
study centre, providing further opportunities for students. The college boasts active NCC
and NSS units
for both male and female students. Furthermore, it provides accommodation in two hostels
with a
combined capacity of 200 students.
Simdega College has made remarkable strides in sports, especially in hockey. In
2024, it
produced international-level players, including Salima Tete, Sangeeta Kumari, Shammy Bara,
and
Mahima Tete. Salima Tete became Jharkhand’s first female Arjuna Awardee as captain of the
Indian
women’s hockey team. Additionally, Saraswati Kumari represented India in wrestling. The
college
excelled in the Inter-College Women's Hockey Tournament, with seven players selected for the
university team. With a legacy of excellence in education and sports, the college continues
to uplift the
local tribal community and foster national-level talent.
